An independent security researcher says he’s uncovered 2,500 websites that can hijack your computer to mine cryptocurrency.
Willem de Groot says cyber thieves are infiltrating sites that use outdated code. This allows them to exploit loopholes and add the infamous CoinHive mining software that can take over your CPU. Many of these sites apparently also contain malware designed to steal your credit card information.
The hijacking usually happens on e-commerce sites. So if you notice your laptop heating up while you’re shopping, you could be experiencing a cyber attack.
