On the Blockchain with Big Brother?

By Daily Hodl Staff

The Internet of Things Consortium (IOTC) has a bold, brave, and breathtaking promise: to keep us connected to our stuff at all times. Imagine living in a world where the interconnections between ourselves and our stuff (i.e. homes, cars, personal items) find their way onto the blockchain. Would this be our collective utopian dream come true or a fresh tear in the post-9/11 Big Brother dystopia?

Warner Bros. joined several participants at IOTC’s meeting on November 16 at the Galen Center in Los Angeles to jump start IOTC’s core mission of objects interconnecting with our lives “via built-in sensors, camera and actuators”.

Speaking to Variety, Bryan Barber, VP of digital innovation at Warner Bros. stated, “What we sell can be sold as as a digital right, the right to watch ‘Wonder Woman’ on your television, the right to walk into a theater to watch ‘Justice League,’ the right to play Injustice on your game console.” He continued, “The Internet of Things is a development that can create millions and millions of internet consumer touch points. The devices you encounter could light up or respond in ways that are uniquely tailored to you as a fan of DC Comics, Harry Potter, or their own fandom.”

Comcast’s Xfinity Home is the IOTC’s latest partner. Reaching beyond entertainment, it will keep us in constant contact with our domains.

According to the IOTC announcement, “Xfinity Home is the next-generation home security, automation, and energy management solution from Comcast. This total home security service includes 24/7 professional monitoring, as well as battery and cellular backup, remote arming and disarming, real-time text and email alerts, 24/7 video recording, live video monitoring, lighting and thermostat control, and smoke and water leak detection. Through the Works With Xfinity Home curated partner program, Xfinity Home seamlessly integrates best-in-class smart home devices into its platform. Whether at home or on the go, customers can manage and stay connected to their homes via the mobile app, online portal, in-home Touchscreen Controller, or on their TV with the Xfinity X1 platform to ensure peace of mind.”
