William Shatner says he’s partnering with the legal tech firm Mattereum and other technology creators to build a blockchain authentication system for collectibles.

Their first project? Tokenizing a one-of-a-kind “Capt. James Kirk in Casual Attire” action figure signed by Shatner, who starred as the iconic character on Star Trek.

As part of the partnership, Mattereum plans to generate “digital twins” for collectibles like the Kirk figurine, according to Anton Shelupanov, the company’s head of public affairs.

“The digital twin, stored on an immutable ledger, will assure collectors that the item is from Mr Shatner’s personal collection.”

“The legal provisions which Mattereum builds will ensure that asset owners and businesses can trade with confidence in the provenance of the items involved. Mattereum provides an effective and fair dispute resolution mechanism that secures rights across the world’s jurisdictions, allowing physical property to be digitally organized and its value unlocked, wherever it resides.”

Shatner says he believes blockchain-based authentication technology will have a big long-term impact on the collectible business.

“With it, we can know where an item has been, who has owned it, and if it is genuine. It can mean the difference between a priceless, future heirloom, and worthless fake.”

Mattereum CEO Vinay Gupta says the collectable authentication technology will just be the first step in a long process of using blockchain to track, verify and improve the efficiency of various processes around the globe.

“Today, we verify that assets are genuine. Soon, we will showcase our blockchain systems for effortless, elegant trade, transfer, track and trace, even physical search. It comes from a new way of thinking about how computers can upgrade physical matter into something more conceptual, more responsive. We are also going to provide the frameworks for environmental impact and carbon tracking.

This isn’t Shatner’s first foray into crypto. Last June, the actor announced he was representing Solar Alliance, an alternative energy installation company that was planning to construct a solar-powered Bitcoin mining facility.
