Zermatt, a Swiss ski town that lies below the pyramid-shaped Matterhorn peak, is now allowing its 5,800 residents to pay taxes in Bitcoin. Officials say there will be no limit on how much a taxpayer can chose to pay in BTC.
The new option is a step beyond two other Swiss towns: Chiasso and Zug. In 2016, Zug began accepting Bitcoin payments for certain government services, such as establishing new business, with a cap of $205 (CHF200) in BTC. In 2018, the town of Chiasso also began accepting Bitcoin for tax bills with a limit of $257 (CHF250).
In addition to the no-limit Bitcoin tax payment option, Zermatt will accept up to $153 (CHF150) in BTC for administrative services. Bitcoin Suisse will process Zermatt’s Bitcoin payments.
Mayor Romy Biner-Hauser tells swissinfo.ch,
“We are curious to see how many people want to use bitcoin to pay their tax bills. We do not expect too many people at first, but we want to show that we are keeping up with the times and are not old fashioned.”
