A railroad company is now sending payments from a $265 million settlement fund to residents impacted by a catastrophic train derailment in Ohio.
The lawsuit targeted the railroad for the February 3rd, 2023, derailment of a train and the subsequent controlled burn of vinyl chloride-laden railcars.
Plaintiffs accused the railroad of negligence in track maintenance and emergency response that allowed hazardous materials to contaminate air, soil, and water supplies.
The suit sought compensation for property damage and business losses for class members within a 20-mile radius, with optional personal injury payments available to those within 10 miles.
Payments for direct claims were mailed on June 30th, 2026 following the resolution of all appeals.
The settlement creates a dedicated fund for cash awards to eligible class members, with allocations varying based on proximity and documented impacts.
Eligible individuals can review full terms and claim status at the official administrator site.
Businesses have a separate $10 million allocation that has not been paid yet.
The company has not made an admission of liability.
