North Carolina Man Loses $12,000 in Bank Impersonation Scam

A man in North Carolina has lost $12,000 after falling for a bank impersonation scam that involved fake emails and in-person couriers.

The man says he received an email on Tuesday, March 10th that appeared to be from his bank, instructing him to call about his account, reports Durham Radio News.

He says he followed the instructions and called the provided number and was told that his bank cards needed to be collected by a courier for security reasons.

After some time, he says a person, whom he describes as a male with brown hair and facial hair, arrived at his house and retrieved the bank cards.

Meanwhile, a second suspect took out more than $12,000 from the victim’s accounts at multiple businesses.

Durham police say they are investigating and have released descriptions of the suspects.

The second is a male with long dark hair in dreadlocks wearing a yellow or beige puffer jacket, a white shirt, khaki pants and black and white shoes.

Police are issuing a warning to the public, reminding residents never to give anyone their bank card or PIN.

Authorities are now asking anyone with information to call 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1805 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
