A Romanian national with 56 warrants allegedly scammed residents of Plano, Texas, with a “cash trapping” device placed in an ATM, according to a new local media report.
The Dallas television station WFAA reports the suspect inserted the metal device into the ATM at a local Bank of America branch in Plano.
[adinserter block="1"]Victims pulling out cash heard the transaction processing, but they never witnessed the money actually come out of the ATM.
The scam impacted a couple of local residents, with the device reportedly facilitating the theft of hundreds of dollars.
Jerry Minton, Plano Police Department’s public information officer, tells WFAA that the suspect targeted banks in Plano, Lewisville, and as far away as Canada.
“He had multiple warrants out of Canada. I think a total of 56.”
Minton says the suspect has previous law enforcement contacts and notes that he was arrested last month in Houston.
“He was waiting for the victims to leave, and then he would come in behind them and take the device off, remove the cash and either put the device back on or walk off.”
The suspect reportedly faces multiple charges. Police encourage any other victims of the ATM scam to reach out.
