Going through customs in a foreign country is a nerve-racking, time-consuming and cumbersome process, ruled by paper passports, flimsy verification letters and law enforcement agents all trying to determine who you are, where you’re from and if you can legally enter the country.
So why not move the madness onto a fast, secure and efficient blockchain?
Jumio and Insights Network say they’re teaming up to do exactly that. Insights Network, the EOS-based blockchain data exchange, will provide the blockchain backbone for Jumio’s identity verification platform.
The app lets you upload your passport, driver’s license, identity card or visa. When you need to prove you are who you say you are, you take a selfie. The app then uses biometric facial recognition to match you with your documents in order to verify your identity on the spot.
Palo-Alto based Jumio says constant company data breaches and Facebook’s recent scandal with Cambridge Analytica show the need for change. “As we’ve seen with data being released and people trying to use social platforms as a form of verification, that information is generally public and can be found instantly,” Jumio’s marketing program manager Jennifer Valdivia told CRN. “They’re selling that information on the dark web so your data is out there… I think to build that trust back we’re going to need to see a lot more protection and security.”
The app is available now for testing on the App Store and Google Play. No word yet on its official release date.
