Lightning Labs and Square have sparked a friendly competition to give the Satoshi, the smallest unit of Bitcoin, its own symbol.
It started after Desiree Dickerson, the head of operations at Lightning Labs, asked Square Crypto if they could crowdsource a symbol from the community on Twitter.

Each Bitcoin can be broken up into 100 million Satoshis, similar to the way one dollar equals 100 pennies. Expressed as a number, one Satoshi equals 0.00000001 BTC.
In order for Bitcoin to attain widespread adoption as a currency, the Satoshi will likely have to stand on its own and become widely used and understood. Although Bitcoin has hit the mainstream vernacular, newcomers to the space are slow to realize that it’s possible to buy, sell and transfer fractions of the leading cryptocurrency.
1 Satoshi | = 0.00000001 ? |
---|---|
100,000 Satoshi | = 0.00100000 ? |
1,000,000 Satoshi | =Â 0.01000000Â ? |
10,000,000 Satoshi | = 0.10000000 ? |
100,000,000 Satoshi | = 1.00000000 ? |

I have a simple github with custom fonts and images of the ($@) character. Feel free to use it! pic.twitter.com/StBmG0EjSz
