The Bitcoin logo (?) will be appearing on official shirts worn by Watford Football Club players this season.
The cryptocurrency’s logo will be featured on the shirt sleeve of Watford FC, which plays in the Premier League, the top level English football league.
The league has experienced a 74% increase in viewership in the past decade. The new Bitcoin plug will place the world’s most popular cryptocurrency in front of a global audience of the world’s most-watched sports league.
Watford FC has an estimated fan base of 1,014,521.
The initiative is being sponsored by Sportsbet.io, an online sportsbook and casino where users can place bets in fiat or cryptocurrencies.
Head of marketing at Sportsbet.io Justin Le Brocque says,
“Our partnership with Watford marks a major disruption in the world of traditional sports sponsorship, and by adding the Bitcoin logo we hope this world’s first partnership will create even more buzz around cryptocurrencies.”
According to Waterford FC’s announcement, the logo is part of a campaign that is focusing on spreading awareness about Bitcoin.
The sponsorship will reportedly be crowdfunded. Those looking to contribute can bid for using the Bitcoin box, the public LED space featured live during football matches, and exclusive Watford FC merchandise. Le Brocque notes,
“Some of the biggest challenges we and others like us face is raising awareness, [and] dispelling common myths around cryptos.”
