Tesla Test Drives Blockchain Pilot to Accelerate Digital Transformation of the Shipping Industry

By Daily Hodl Staff

Tesla says it’s successfully completed its participation in a blockchain pilot project. The pilot is designed to accelerate the digital transformation of the shipping industry by streamlining the billing process. Tesla joined Cosco Shipping Lines and Shanghai International Port Group as participants. The project, which began in December of last year, was led by CargoSmart Limited, a leading shipment management technology solutions provider.

According to an announcement, the cutting-edge pilot is among the first utilizing blockchain technology to improve procedures for both an ocean carrier that operates a real-time exchange of shipment data and a terminal operator.

The main goal of the pilot was to expedite paperwork, allowing Tesla truckers to pick up their cargo at the Shanghai terminal faster.

In March, CargoSmart enhanced the application to show more details about each shipment, including appointment dates and terminal releases, leveraging blockchain’s ability to facilitate transparent and secure data.

Says Henry Huang, executive deputy general manager of operation at Shanghai International Port Group,

“The pilot is a key component of our journey towards paperless, trusted, and seamless trade processes at the Port of Shanghai, and it demonstrates the benefits for supply chain stakeholders around the world.”

The participants expect more companies to digitally transfer their global supply chains as blockchain-based applications drive value for customers and enterprises.

Wu Yu, general manager of business process and system division at Cosco, adds,

“The pilot with SIPG and CargoSmart showcased significant efficiency gains not only in the cargo release process, but also for downstream supply chain planning by presenting a single source of truth for documentation for all involved parties.”

Tesla delivered the first China-made Model 3s at its Gigafactory 3 plant in Shanghai on December 29, 2019.
