A total of $37.56 million is being given away in a pair of guaranteed income programs in two of the nation’s major metropolitan areas.
A program called Breathe is expanding in Los Angeles county, with the initial aim of giving $1,000 a month to 1,000 people who are struggling to make ends meet over the course of three years.
Now, the program has started giving money to people who have gone through the foster care system, with 200 people age 21 to 23 receiving $1,000 a month over the course of two years.
Meanwhile in Paterson, New Jersey, the application process is open for a guaranteed income pilot that will hand out a total of $960,000.
Two-hundred families will be selected via a lottery system to receive debit cards loaded with $400 in free monthly income for an entire year.
To qualify, individuals must have an income below $30,000, and families below $88,000. All applicants must be 18 years old or older, and be a resident of Paterson.
The programs are two one dozens that are launching across the US in an effort to determine how cash handouts can help people living below the poverty line.
