A firm operating in the healthcare industry is warning that hundreds of thousands of Americans are at risk of identity theft and fraud following a major cybersecurity incident.
In a new filing with the Maine Attorney General, Healthcare Services Group, Inc. (HSGI) says 624,496 individuals are affected by a massive data breach.
[adinserter block="1"]The firm says that a hacker gained access to its database and accessed files that may include names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, state identification numbers, financial account records and full access credentials.
“On October 7, 2024, HSGI learned of potential unauthorized access to certain HSGI computer systems. Upon learning of the activity, HSGI quickly took steps to secure its computer systems and began an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the activity.
The investigation determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed and copied certain files on HSGI’s computer systems between September 27, 2024, and October 3, 2024. As a result, we undertook an extensive review of the involved files to determine whether they contained sensitive information and to whom the information relates. This review recently concluded, and HSGI determined that certain personal information was present in the files.”
HSGI is a Pennsylvania-based firm that provides outsourced housekeeping, laundry, dining and nutritional services to more than 3,000 healthcare facilities nationwide.
The firm says it sent letters of notification to affected individuals while offering free 12-month credit monitoring services through Experian. But for now, HSGI says it has not received reports of actual or attempted identity theft or fraud arising from the data breach.
