A new video mashup is exposing the skyrocketing cost of living in cities across the US.
The video from the YouTube channel ModernDayChaos shows dozens of people who are sharing their struggles buying groceries, labeling soaring prices as “outrageous,” “shocking” and “insane.”
At Walmart, one shopper reels at checkout prices – a bag of string cheese at $12.47, Oreos at $5.98, generic salt and pepper at $5.83, and one orange for $0.97.
Nuts, she says, are “for rich people.”
A couple near Seattle spends $1,200 a month on groceries. No kids, just two adults and a dog.
They buy protein, veggies, and occasional alcohol. Every three days, they drop $90-$100, questioning how others manage.
One woman says survival now demands the creativity and resilience of the Great Depression, recommending people learn how to live on rice, beans, flour, cornmeal and molasses.
Another woman says a large can of dried coffee has gone from $9.92 in June of 2023 to $17.33 in 2025, with inflation nearly doubling a cup of joe while her salary has barely increased.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index for August 2025, overall food prices rose by 3.2% over the previous 12 months, with food at home increasing by 2.7% and food away from home by 3.9%.
Specific categories showed varied increases, including a 5.6% rise in meats, poultry, fish, and eggs, 4.6% in nonalcoholic beverages, and 1.9% in fruits and vegetables.
