By Mark Emem

A US bank says a hack involving an employee’s email account has placed some of its customers’ information at risk.

In a filing with the state government of Massachusetts, California International Bank says an “unauthorized individual” accessed the email account of one of its employees between September 11th of 2024 and September 12th of 2024.

California International Bank says it immediately launched an investigation after learning about the incident.

“We conducted a thorough review of the potentially impacted emails and on August 29, 2025, we determined that the email account may have contained your personal information.”

So far, California International Bank says it has no evidence that the breached data belonging to its customers has been used to commit identity theft or fraud. The bank is nevertheless offering complimentary credit monitoring services “out of an abundance of caution.”

Among other things, California International Bank says the credit monitoring services provided by Experian IdentityWorks will enable its customers to protect their personal information by placing fraud alerts or security freezes. The complimentary credit monitoring service will also offer an identity theft insurance cover worth $1 million that will provide “coverage for certain costs and unauthorized electronic fund transfers.”

California International Bank’s customers will also be eligible for a free credit report from the credit monitoring service.

“Additionally, you should always remain vigilant in reviewing your financial account statements and credit reports for fraudulent or irregular activity on a regular basis.”
