47,876 Americans Warned After Hackers Hit NYSE-Listed Firm, Placing Personal and Financial Data at Risk

A Minnesota-based financial services firm with $1.7 trillion in assets under management has suffered a second security incident in a span of less than six months.

According to a report submitted by Ameriprise Financial (NYSE: AMP) to the office of the Maine Attorney General, the latest breach happened on March 2nd and was discovered on March 18th. The incident affected 47,876 people.

In a notice of data breach sent on April 17th, Robert Severson of Ameriprise’s Global Privacy Office tells affected individuals that the incident may have exposed their name, address, date of birth, account numbers and social security number. 

Severson says affected individuals should monitor their accounts and register a fraud alert and security freeze with major credit bureaus to protect themselves from potential misuse of information.

“Unfortunately, it has been determined that there has been unauthorized access to your information…Be vigilant if you receive a call from someone who claims to represent Ameriprise Financial.

If you have any doubts about the caller, hang up and call your advisor to verify the validity of the call. If you notice any unusual activity, contact your advisor or Ameriprise Financial Customer.”

In December, an Ameriprise advisor also fell victim to a phishing scam.

The incident potentially compromised the personal and financial data of 598 people. These include their name, address, phone number, email address, birthdate, income, net worth, account and policy numbers, account values and medical information.
