AssuranceAmerica, an insurance-related company handling customer records, revealed a massive data incident involving millions of customer records.
The Atlanta-based firm confirms the cybersecurity attack impacting the personal and driver’s license information of 6.9 million people, reports TechCrunch.
In a notice to customers, AssuranceAmerica says an unauthorized party infiltrated its systems, accessed files and stole customer data, including contact information, automobile insurance policy or insurance account data, driver or vehicle records, claims-related information and driver’s license numbers.
“On March 17, 2026, the Company detected suspicious activity involving certain Company systems that appears to have resulted from malicious activity on March 16, 2026 that targeted one of the Company’s employees. The Company promptly began an investigation and engaged external computer forensic specialists to help determine what occurred and what data may have been impacted. During the investigation, the Company determined that an unauthorized third party accessed certain portions of the Company’s information technology (IT) environment and copied certain data files.”
For now, AssuranceAmerica says it has taken steps to harden its network defenses to prevent a similar event from happening in the future, while abruptly sending a notice to affected customers. The firm also says it has been in touch with law enforcement agencies.
The company is urging customers to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity involving their bank accounts and financial statements.
