Forks are typically used to give developers a way to modify a coin’s code and adopt a new and improved version of the platform. They’re also used to create entirely new coins with new names, teams and goals.

However, Bitcoin forks are also notorious for copy-pasting Bitcoin’s code, adopting the Bitcoin name and making vague promises on improvements that will be implemented in the future, with few details on development or on the team behind the project.

Early this year, the global director of fintech strategy at Autonomous Research, Lex Sokolin, predicted a crush of at least 50 Bitcoin forks to come in 2018 alone.
