The persistent crypto scammers on Twitter are clearly getting to Elon Musk.
Twitter is starting to step up efforts to stop cryptocurrency schemes that abuse its platform and target unsuspecting users. The company says it just banned 486 accounts from the platform for engaging in “coordinated manipulation.”
Scammers regularly create Twitter profiles that are nearly identical to leading figures in the world of tech and cryptocurrency, pretending to give away Ethereum and other coins. The cyber thieves tell unsuspecting victims to send them a small amount of crypto and promise to send a larger amount in return, which never happens.
The new bans are likely a drop in the bucket compared to the torrent of crypto scammers on Twitter.
When Musk heard about the latest bans, he joked about how convincing and persistent the scammers are – convincing enough to make him want to own some Ethereum.

In July Musk tweeted that he was impressed by the Twitter scambots “Mad skillz”.
Musk revealed in February that he does, in fact, own a small amount of cryptocurrency. He’s a hodler of .25 Bitcoin that a friend sent him many years ago.
