Wells Fargo Refuses To Reimburse Customer After $14,952 Abruptly Drained From Account: Report

An elderly Wells Fargo customer says the bank has done nothing to rectify the theft of more than $10,000 from her checking account.

Dallas resident Billie Young says she wrote two checks in August 2024 to pay off her car loan and her electric bill, reports the Houston-based outlet KHOU 11.

The 83-year-old says she called Wells Fargo on September 6th after receiving a cutoff notice from the utility company. Young says the bank’s representative told her that the check for the electric company did not clear. She says she told Wells Fargo to cancel the payment before it was processed.

“Well, put a stop payment on that one.”

When she asked about the other check, the bank’s representative told her that it had cleared.

But about a month later, Young says she was surprised to receive a bill from her car lender.

“So now I’m upset at my car dealer because the money came out of my account.”

Young says it took several weeks before she received a copy of the cashed check, which amounted to $14,952.

She says that the payee had been altered to someone she did not know, leading her to file a fraud complaint in October 2024. Wells Fargo refused to reimburse Young, citing that she had missed the 30-day deadline to file a claim under the deposit account agreement.

Says Wells Fargo in a May 2025 letter sent to Young,

“The customer is responsible for reviewing their monthly account statements and letting us know within 30 days about any errors or unauthorized transactions. The claim will remain denied, and we will not reimburse you for the disputed transactions.”

The bank told KHOU 11 that it is re-evaluating the case. Young, who has been a Wells Fargo customer since 1996, has since closed her account.
